Vitamin B-12 is absolutely essential for the formation of blood cells and for the proper function of the nervous system.
Vitamin B-12 malabsorption can occur as a result of any of the following:
1) insufficient intake,
2) insufficient protein digestion in the stomach (essential to release vitamin B-12 from ingested foods,
3) insufficient production of intrinsic factor produced from the parietal cells following their destruction by autoimmune or infectious processes,
4) insufficient production of pancreatic enzymes,
5) inefficient absorption in the ileum due to diseases processes such as bacterial overgrowth, bowel disease such as Crohn's disease, or surgical resection.
Although physicians have previously relied on intramuscular injections of vitamin B-12 for patients who are deficient in this vitamin, more recently several research articles have shown that patients can actually achieve a higher blood level of B-12 when large doses are administered orally. Most of these studies have used 2,000 mcg per day. Therefore, oral dosing provides superior benefits with reduced cost and increased patient comfort.
Folic acid is necessary for the proper uptake and utilization of vitamin B-12.
Each lozenge supplies:
Vitamin B6 (pyrodoxal-5-phosphate) 2 mg
Folic acid 800 mcg
Vitamin B-12 2,000 mcg
